Have you ever been to the shoreline of Hudson’s Bay? It stretches out for miles as far as the eye can see. What an expanse lies there before you! The clear crystal blue sea, cold and deep. But not as deep as some other oceans. The deepest water on the face of the earth is the Mariana Trench located in the western Pacific Ocean about 200 kilometres east of the Mariana Islands. It is crescent-shaped and measures about 2,550 km in length and 69 km in width. The maximum known depth is 10,984 metres (± 25 metres). By comparison, if you could imagine Mount Everest placed in this trench, its peak would still be covered by two kilometres of water! The deepest sea is higher than the highest mountain.
The Bible sometimes speaks of the depth of the sea. One reference is a very solemn one. The Lord Jesus condemned wicked sinners whose lives not only destroyed themselves but had a sinful influence on young children coming after them. He said that it would be better for these sinners to have a millstone put around their necks and to be drowned in the depth of the sea (Matthew 18:6) than to face the coming wrath of God (Matthew 18:6). What a fearful thought!
But there is also a positive mention of the ocean depths. For those who repent of their sinful ways and trust Christ for forgiveness, God will turn again and have compassion on them. In fact, for the person who trusts God’s remedy for sin (Christ’s death on the cross for our sins), “He will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea” (Micah 7:19). How wonderful is that? Hebrews 8:12 says, “I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.”
So, where are YOUR sins? Still on your soul or in a place of God’s divine forgetfulness as if they were thrown into the depths of the deepest sea? There is nothing that you or I can do to take away our sins. Only Christ can do that. And He has. Have you repented of your sins and trusted Him? It’s the only way.
