Walking around graveyards is a very interesting and instructive activity. Not only can we relive memories of our loved ones buried there, we can guess at what the lives of the strangers there were like. We see the ‘dash line’ between the two dates carved on every headstone. Kind of sad, isn’t it? All of that person’s dreams, worries, joys, trials, work and accomplishments is packed into that one little dash. Life is pretty short, isn’t it?
The Bible says that “it is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting” (Ecclesiastes 7:2). Why is that? The answer is given in the same verse – “for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.” Dancing, drinking and partying makes us forget all about God. It deceives us into thinking that we are okay, that we can do what we like. We learn more from walking in graveyards. We learn more from going to funerals. We are reminded that we won’t always be here. We are reminded that death will someday come for us. And hopefully, we will be wise and prepare. Where will you be when friends and loved ones visit YOUR grave?
The Bible says, “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). Are YOU ready for the judgment? Are you taking your sins with you when you die? If they are to be forgiven, they must be forgiven here on earth. The Bible says that “Christ has power ON EARTH to forgive sins” (Mark 2:10). You need to trust Him now. You need new life now. We can do nothing to save ourselves. That is why Christ came to earth – to bear the punishment for us. What great news! Have you trusted Him?
